Dan Dorner

Head of the Strategic Initiatives Office, IEA


 Dan Dorner became the Head of the Strategic Initiatives Office at the International Energy Agency in December 2022, marking his return to the IEA where he will now assume responsibility for coordinating strategic initiatives across the Agency, including its flagship Clean Energy Transitions Programme.


Immediately prior to re-joining the IEA, Mr Dorner, a British national, was Head of Secretariat for the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), a global forum tasked with accelerating clean energy transitions that is hosted by the IEA. Mr Dorner assumed his position at the CEM in May 2020 after serving three years as the UK’s Head of International Energy, advising the government across a wide spectrum of bilateral and multilateral energy policy issues, as well as representing the UK at venues such as the G7, G20, the IEA and IRENA.


Mr Dorner earlier spent six years at the IEA in Paris, working as a lead author for the Agency’s flagship World Energy Outlook report, leading project teams delivering a wide range of policy advice, and serving as the Executive Director’s Sherpa to the United Nations. 


Mr Dorner has also held a variety of positions at the UK Treasury Department, including senior economic analyst and senior policy adviser. Mr Dorner holds a Master’s Degree in International Management from the University of Sunderland and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Lancaster University.
